Duolingo is the free science-based language education platform selected by Apple as iPhone App of the Year 2013, by Google as Best of the Best for Android 2013, and by TechCrunch as Best Education Startup.

It was created by crowdsourcing pioneer Luis von Ahn, PhD, and Severin Hacker, PhD.

With over 38 million users, Duolingo has organically become the most popular way to learn languages online in only 2 years.

In a recent independent study, professors from the City University of New York (CUNY) and the University of South Carolina found that when using Duolingo for 34 hours, students learn the equivalent of one university semester of language instruction.

If you’re looking to converse on vacation or simply watch a foreign movie without the subtitles, Duolingo can help!
I’d always loved languages in my school days. As a native English speaker I also studied French, German and Spanish, but that was eight years ago and I’m a little out of practise.

Ready to take on a new challenge, I signed up to Duolingo. Through following the simple system, which utilises photos, audio and written text, my previous knowledge came flooding back and I quickly began to level up in my selected languages. I think it’s great that you cannot progress until you’ve proven your competence in the current subject, often revising sentences several times to ensure maximum retention.

More recently, Duolingo added Danish to their repertoire. I’m a huge fan of Danish television shows (and their talented, attractive stars, but I digress), and jumped at the opportunity to learn the language for myself. I’m currently at level four (out of a possible twenty five) and love building up XP, almost like a game. Learning feels effortless and rewarding, just as it should.

With 9 languages currently available to learn and more in the works, Duolingo is definitely a site to keep an eye on and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, whether you’re new to languages or an experienced polyglot.

Duolingo is one of a kind website. I mean the way it tought me Spanish was incredible. It's just like a game, it is the least boring learning experience anyone could have!

Such a fantastic podcast!
Duncan has a knack for narrative history, taking all the disparate stories and facts and weaving it all together into a story that's fun and engaging.
It's also very well researched.
Would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in history.

I think the site looks dull now. I hope it evolves into more modern design. And also consider user experience.

I heartily agree with the reviews on this podcast series left so far by other listeners. I've not yet listened to Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast (though I'm now inspired to do so), but the History of Byzantium podcast is a tour de force from Robin. He has done a sterling and balanced job...
