User Review , Business

Yelp is a multinational corporation headquartered in San Francisco, California. It develops, hosts and markets Yelp.com and the Yelp mobile app, which publish crowd-sourced reviews about local businesses. Yelp also trains small businesses to respond to reviews responsibly; hosts social events for reviewers; and provides basic data about businesses, such as hours of operation.

Yelp was founded in 2004 by former Paypal employees at startup incubator MRL Ventures. It was initially an unsuccessful email-based referral service, but was re-launched on the basis of unsolicited online reviews. It grew quickly and raised several rounds of funding. It had $30 million in revenues by 2010 and had collected more than 4.5 million crowd-sourced reviews. From 2009–2012, Yelp expanded throughout Europe and Asia. In 2009 it entered negotiations with Google for a potential acquisition, but a deal was never reached. Yelp became a public company in March 2012 and became profitable for the first time in 2014.

Ok. I can't really say enough about Yelp being an internet bully especially when it comes to smaller businesses. I understand that you have to keep a site moving by having advertisements and what not. But when it comes to small business owners wanting control over their own yelp page and web presence, it should not cost them an arm and a leg. Because people who review a business' page can post and comment and review what they think about the business, but the business has no control (unless they spend hundreds of dollars MONTHLY) in managing, interacting, and adjusting their appearance on yelp. I am talking about businesses having a say in specific photos being the first photos instead of a blurry photo of some reviewer's cake. That blurry photo could affect business in a negative way, and said company is not responsible for the poor blurry advertisement. And YELP completely stifles honest businesses and their right to further their success. Yelp would not EXIST without businesses that WANT reviews and want to grow through customer reviews. So Yelp needs to really reconsider how they treat the companies being reviewed, if they want to keep that site running. Their technical support and service is poor and anyone trying to get answers from them will hang up with empty unsatisfied pockets. Yelp favors businesses that contribute hefty membership fees, and that leaves little room for smaller businesses to grow. Yelp feeds into monopolizing chain businesses and therefore hurts the economy. It is corrupt.

And to climb into this horrific dark dank rabbit hole even further, if reviewers on yelp want to leave REVIEWS... then I think we should be able to REVIEW THE REVIEWER. Just because this person doesn't like the sushi, how do I KNOW that they don't eat fish sticks everyday, and spicy tuna is completely whack to them. To be honest, anyone who eats fish sticks daily is not someone I'd go to seeking advice.

That's my two cents and some change on yelp from a business owner's standpoint instead of a reviewer.

The History of English Podcast

As an Englishman I find the content not just incredibly interesting but also very fulfilling as I learn the historical origins of the words, grammar and syntax that I use - almost without thinking - every day. It's given me a real insight into my own culture and the way that I communicate with ot...

Love the History of English podcast and its website. The maps are great and the audio samples, like the Gregorian chants or "Sumer Is Icumen In" add so much to an already terrific podcast.

I also bought from the website the Beowulf audiobook, which was terrific, and my husband boug...

Very much enjoy The History of Byzantium podcast and website. I like the maps on the site and the ability to buy special episodes from the site.

I wish there was an easier way to get to specific episodes, or at least specific maps. Still, the site is so much better than many simil...

too many spam sites and broken links displayed, they need to clean up the search results other than traffic-related sites displayed on the first page. how about they request additional info at the search text entry.
