Marvel Worldwide Inc., commonly referred to as Marvel Comics and formerly Marvel Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Comics Group, is an American publisher of comic books and related media. In 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Worldwide's parent company.

Marvel started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1961, the year that the company launched The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and many others.

Marvel counts among its characters such well-known properties as Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Captain America, the Silver Surfer, and the Avengers and antagonists such as the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Loki, Galactus, Thanos, and the Red Skull. Most of Marvel's fictional characters operate in a single reality known as the Marvel Universe, with locations that mirror real-life cities. Characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, Daredevil and Dr. Strange are based in New York City, whereas the X-Men have historically been based in Salem Center, New York, and the Hulk's stories have usually been set in the American Southwest.

Marvel is, whether you want to admit it or not, the first giant of the current comic book world. With it's rich variety of characters who are rooted in our world, it has tantalized the imaginations of millions.

This site is full of resources, character bios, and the latest news from the comic and film universes.

As an incredible added bonus, if you buy print copies of the weekly trade comics, you can enter a code from the pages of the book into the website and get a free digital copy. Great news for collectors, or fans who want to go back and read comics on the go.

Disney has officially disbanded the Imperial Senate. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this multinational conglomerate.

You may say to yourself; He better not put too much faith in this technological terror you've constructed. The power of this merger is nothing compared to the power of the Force.

Well, we own that shit too, so don't you worry.

Dear Travelzoo,

This is a love letter. Are you beautiful? Mmmm... you're pretty but let's not be hyperbolic and say you're gorgeous. I mean, you're definitely not fugly or anything! (4 stars!) You could try a little harder but we all know that it's what's on the inside that counts....

Such a fantastic podcast!
Duncan has a knack for narrative history, taking all the disparate stories and facts and weaving it all together into a story that's fun and engaging.
It's also very well researched.
Would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in history.

I think the site looks dull now. I hope it evolves into more modern design. And also consider user experience.

I heartily agree with the reviews on this podcast series left so far by other listeners. I've not yet listened to Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast (though I'm now inspired to do so), but the History of Byzantium podcast is a tour de force from Robin. He has done a sterling and balanced job...

I have found the History of English podcast absolutely riveting; in fact, I 'binged- listened' my way through the first 100 or so episodes, and am very relieved that there are clearly many more to come :-). History via etymology - a great concept, well-delivered by Kevin. Highly recommended.
